Calvin Knights Fall to Robert Morris 4-3

The Calvin Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team fell to the Robert Morris Eagles 4-3 in a shootout on Friday night.

In the first period both teams came out fast and strong looking to find the early lead. The Knights recieved some great chances early in the game but could not find a way through the Eagle goaltender. About halfway through the period, the Eagles struck first taking a 1-0 lead over the Knights. Just a few minutes later the Knights tied the game with a goal from Brandon VanOphem with the assist from Cal Erdmann. Both teams got a couple more good looks in front of goal, but niether team could take the lead. The first period concluded with the game tied 1-1. 

In the second period the Knights once again went on the attack, but they could not finish on the chances they recieved. Once again, about halfway through the period the Eagles were able to put another in the back of the net and reclaim their one goal lead. The Knights looked to tie the game once again but came up short. The second period concluded with the Eagles leading 2-1. 

In the third period the Knights came out strong. Just three minutes into the period the Knights got a goal from Nick Workman with the helpers from Jared Virtanen and Keegan Weckesser. Soon after the Knights had tied the game the Eagles retook the lead once more. The Knights fought back hard to tie the game up once again, and with three minutes to go in the period they got a goal from Jared Virtanen to tie the game up at 3-3. The third period ended with the game still tied 3-3. 

In overtime both teams recieved really good chances in front of goal but could not find the back of the net. Overtime ended still tied and the teams headed to a shootout. 

In the shootout, the first shooters for both teams missed their chances respectfully. Then the second shooter for the Knights Jared Virtanen scored on his chance to take the lead. The Eagles answered with a goal of their own to tie the shootout at 1-1. The third shooter for the Knights missed on their chance and the Eagles capitalized on their own. The game concluded with a tough loss for the Knights 4-3.

Knights Goaltender Alex Gross had a strong game with 45 saves on the night.
