Calvin Knights Defeat the Oakland University Grizzlies 4-3

The Calvin Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team defeated the Oakland University Grizzlies 4-3 on Friday night.

In the first period both teams came out strong. The Grizzlies and the Knights went back and forth with good chances but could not find a way to put one in the back of the net. With about twelve minutes to go in the first period the Grizzlies got on the scoreboard. Just 40 seconds after the Grizzlies first goal they tallied another to take a two goal lead over the Knights. The Knights fought back hard to cut down the Grizzlies lead but they could not get past the Grizzlies goaltender. At the end of the first period the Knights were down 2-0. 

In the second period the Knights came out fast and quickly got on the scoresheet just 30 seconds into the period with a goal from Austin Huzienga with the assists from Cal Erdmann and Jared Virtanen. About half way through the second the Knights tied the game with a goal from Ben Morse with the helpers from Garrett Pitter and Josh Hartlein. Just a minute later the Knights took the lead with a goal from Keegan Weckesser with the assists from Samuel Dexter and Riley Robertson. Late in the period the Grizzlies fought back hard and got another goal to tie the game at 3-3. The second period concluded with the game tied 3-3. 

In the third period the Knights and the Grizzlies traded good chances back and forth all throughout. Neither team could find the back of the net. The thrid period concluded with the game still tied 3-3 as we headed into overtime. 

In overtime the game really opened up with some 3-on-3 hockey. Both teams got really good chances in front of goal but they could not find the back of the net. The Knights pushed really hard to find the game winner and with just 26 second left to go in overtime Keegan Weckesser scored for his second tally of the night. The assists on the game winning goal came from Samuel Dexter and Josh Hartlein. The Knights finished the game on top with a score of 4-3. 

Knights Goaltender Alex Gross had a strong game with 25 saves on the night.
