OLIVET, Mich. - Calvin clinched a share of its eighth consecutive MIAA regular season title with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 conference victory at Olivet Wednesday night.
Calvin improves to 24-1 overall and 7-0 in the MIAA heading into its final weekend of regular season play.
Calvin rolled early against Olivet, hitting .469 in set one before the Comets (14-14 overall, 2-5 MIAA) stiffened in set two, pulling to within at point 23-22 before dropping the final two points and the set.
Olivet maintained contact with Calvin in set three, trailing 18-17 before the Knights ripped off seven of the final nine points to seal the match.
Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had 14 kills, 19 assists and seven blocks. Senior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) and freshman Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison HS) had 13 kills apiece. Senior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) and freshman Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) had eight digs apiece. Freshman Ellie Westrate (Sun Prairie, Wisc./Lakeside Lutheran HS) had 21 assists, five digs and three service aces.
"I was happy with our concentration," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "It is always tough to win on the road. Olivet picked up its play in set two and three and played really well. We love playing at Olivet because they have the freshest warm-up music played by a DJ named DTate. He's great and we love coming here for his warm-up music!"
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to rival Hope for a rare non-conference match. Friday's match at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. The Knights then conclude the MIAA regular season on Saturday, hosting Alma at 1 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
