GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The top-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team improved to 8-0 on the season with a hard-fought four-set win over 11th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan Friday night at the DePauw Tiger Invitational.
Calvin dropped the opening set by a 25-17 count but came back to take the next three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-17, 25-23.
In the deciding fourth set, Calvin overcame a 22-15 deficit with a 10-1 run to end the set and the match.
Senior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) tallied 19 kills and 10 digs. Kamp had a pair of key kills in Calvin's final fourth set surge.
Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) picked up her second triple-double in seven days, notching 10 kills, 25 assists and 19 digs. DeVries had a kill and three assists in Calvin's final run.
Freshman Kelsey Smith was also huge with 10 kills, five digs, three service aces and a pair of block assists.
Freshman Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) had 16 assists and eight digs. Senior libero Keilahna Castillo had 15 digs. Junior Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg HS) had six kills and a block assist.
As a team, Calvin recorded a season-high 70 digs.
"We played a very good team with a lot of offensive weapons," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We hung tough through some sloppy play to play awesome at times. We were very resilient tonight when we needed to be. I am happy with what we learned from the match."
Calvin is now 3-0 this year against teams ranked in the Top 25.
Calvin returns to action at the DePauw Invite on Saturday as it is scheduled to face host DePauw as well as Rose-Hulman Institute.
