Diekema Dominates to Lead Calvin Women's Track and Field Weekend

The Calvin women's indoor track and field team had a busy weekend of action as the team split up its squad with its distance team competing at the Grand Valley State Big Meet while the remainder of the team competed at the Aquinas College Little Meet.

At Grand Valley on Friday, senior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) blazed her way to a school-record time of 4:52.80 in the mile run, breaking the previous record of 4:56.81 set by Lauren Bergstrom in 2009. Diekema's time on Friday currently ranks fourth on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field list.

Calvin also had eight individuals compete in the 5,000 meter run. Junior Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded a season-best time of 18:11.76. Freshman Sadie Heeringa (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a season-best time of 18:17.51. Senior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) came in with a time of 18:48.62. Freshman Annie Needs (Peru, Il./Saint Bede Academy) had a time of 18:58.62. Senior Maria Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) recorded a time of 19:07.57, junior Leah Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded a time 19:20.31 while freshman Carly Bogdajewicz (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) came in at 19:33.37. Freshman Brynne Winiarski (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) had a time of 19:43.57 and junior Jenna Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) a time of 20:06.06.

On Saturday at the Aquinas meet, junior Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) took fourth in the high jump (4-9 3/4). Sophomore Renee Miller (Marlette, Mich./Marlette HS) was fifth in the long jump (16-10 3/4) and junior Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) seventh (16-8). Rozell also placed fifth in the triple jump (33-0 1/4).

In the weight throw, freshman Tanya Visser (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was seventh (40-6 3/4). Calvin finished sixth in the team standings with 16 points.
