GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's track & field team finished in third place at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic. In a field filled with NCAA Division II and NAIA teams, Calvin recorded 112 points and three individual victories. Aquinas won with 202.5 points.
"There were some great results all across the board," said head coach Bret Otte. "I was really impressed with the team tonight. Katie had a great 5K race today. Erin Van Lenten had a great all-around day and Kayla Van Lenten really did well in the pole vault."
Senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, N.J./Eastern Christian) shattered her career record in the pole vault on Friday. She recorded a first-place finish with a vault of 10-8 ¾ feet.
Sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was victorious in the 3000-meter run at Aquinas. Koetje clocked in with a career-best time of 10:19.87, almost six seconds fastest than the next-fastest runner.
Sophomore Jackie Amissah-Nunoo (Accra, Ghana/Akosombo International) finished eighth in the 60-meter dash at 8:48.
Senior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) placed second in the 200-meter dash at 26.16 at Aquinas. She also finished second in the triple jump at 36 feet, 4.75 inches and second in the long jump 18 feet, 2.25 inches, the 11th best performance in NCAA Division III.
Sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) crossed the finish line at 2:29.72 in the 800-meter run in fourth place with her best time at Calvin.
In the 1-mile run, sophomore Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian) recorded a fourth-place time of 5:16.57.
The Knights landed a one-two punch in the 5000-meter run. Junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) won with a time of 18:38.01. In second place was junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) at 18:58.33.
In the 60-meter hurdles, junior Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, N.J./Eastern Christian) finish in fourth place with a career-best time of 9.41. She also placed fifth in the high jump at 5 feet, ½ inches.
The Knights return to action on Thursday at the GVSU Big Meet.
