Calvin Women's Tennis Blows by Bulldogs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin blew by the Bulldogs of Adrian 9-0 Tuesday afternoon in a conference match at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Calvin (12-5 overall, 3-2 MIAA) got off to a quick start in doubles play, sweeping the three doubles points in quick fashion. Sophomores Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) steamrolled to an 8-0 win at No. doubles.

Sophomore Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and freshman Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Junior Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and freshman Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Newhof improved to 20-5 overall and 4-1 against MIAA opponents with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Samantha Cyrus. Brouwer defeated Sara Anthony 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles while Poortenga was a 6-2. 6-2 winner over Elena Bishop at No. 3 singles.

Brown toppled Julia Maltbie 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles while Bonner recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over MacKenna Crowley at No. 6 singles.

Freshman Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind./Concord HS) provided the highlight of the afternoon, pulling out a 6-7, 6-1, 10-8 win at No. 4 singles to complete the 9-0 win.

COACHES QUOTE: "We started out really well in doubles today. We played real clean," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "That was important coming off a really tough match against Saint Mary's on Saturday. singles we got the first five points and then Maya did a nice job with a comeback victory to complete the win for us. Now it's on to Saturday.
