GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's tennis team defeated Augustana 5-4 on Friday afternoon at Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Starting with doubles competition, the duo of sophomores Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) defeated Caitlyn Schaffer and Madeline Lombardi 8-2 at No. 1.
Rounding out play at No. 3 doubles, the team of freshmen Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg) and Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, IN. / Concord High School) fell to Morgan Bullen and Leraaen Abbott 8-4.
Moving on to singles play, Newhof defeated Schaffer 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1.
At No. 2 singles, Brouwer won a three-set battle over Timm 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Poortenga fell to Badawi 7-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
Also winning a three-set battle was Klopfenstein over Lombardi with score of 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, Brown fell to Bullen in a three-set match of 4-6, 7-5, 4-10.
Rounding out singles play at No. 6 was junior Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian)with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Abbott.
Head Coach Kevin Van Haitsma stated, "This was a nice win for our program. Our team really battled well and played with confidence and resilience. After being down 2-1 in the doubles, we rallied in the singles for a nice comeback win. Now we need to keep that momentum going for a huge conference match tomorrow vs Saint Mary's."
The Knights return to action on Saturday as the head to Indiana to take on Saint Mary's at 1 p.m.
