Calvin Women's Tennis Blows by Britons

ALBION - Calvin cruised to a 9-0 conference win at Albion Saturday afternoon. The regionally-ranked Knights improve to 10-4 overall and to 2-1 in the MIAA.

Calvin grabbed three quick points in doubles to take the early momentum. Sophomores Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and freshman Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. unior Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and freshman Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) were 8-3 winners at No. 3 doubles.

Newhoff defeated Lauren Solano 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to improve her season singles record to 17-5. Brouwer defeated Marceline Redick 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Poortenga was a 6-1, 6-0 victor at No. 3 singles over Kathryn Valade while freshman Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind./Concord HS) topped Saige Jost 6-1, 6-0.

Grace Brown then defeated Madeline Samra 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while Bonner toppled Namara Swillum 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

The Knights are now in third place in the MIAA standings, trailing 3-0 Hope and Saint Mary's. Calvin will host Augustana next Friday at 10 a.m.
