SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Calvin women's tennis team advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals with a 5-3 victory over Saint Mary's on Thursday evening. The victory is the second victory over the Belles in the last eight days, with Calvin securing a 5-4 victory on senior day. Calvin improves to 14-6 on the year and Saint Mary's finishes the season at 12-8. With the victory, Calvin advances to the MIAA Finals for the first time in the modern format and for the first time since 2010.
"I am really proud of the team," said head coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We knew Saint Mary's was going to give us a battle and that is what we got. We started off with two big wins in doubles play and we rode that momentum into singles play. The team battled through and we were able to walk away with a really big victory."
Senior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home school) and sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) earned the first point on Thursday. The Calvin team defeated Maddie Minaudo and Lilly Chamberlin, 8-2.
The Belles tied the match with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The freshman duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) downed the Davy family once again at No. 1 doubles. The Knights dropped the Davy family, 8-6. The Calvin team has won its last seven matches.
Anna Asfour earned the first singles point of the match at No. 3 singles. Asfour canned Kelsey Kpft, 6-3, 6-2. Asfour has now won 11-straight matches.
Leah Newhof made quick work of Monica Davy at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, to win her eighth-straight match.
The Belles bounced back into the match with victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Madeline Brouwer avenged last week's loss with a match-clinching victory at No. 2 singles. Brouwer took the first set 6-2 and rallied back from down 30-15 to win the second set 6-3.
Calvin will travel to Hope on Friday to play for the MIAA crown.
