GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Leah Newhof claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women's tennis Player of the Week honors on Monday for matches through April 8. Newhof helped the Knights go 2-0 last week with victories over Alma and Olivet.
"It's a great honor for Leah to be named MIAA Athlete of the Week," said Calvin head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Leah had a great week helping lead us to a 2-0 week in the MIAA. She has had a great attitude and work ethic all year, and you can see it in her play. We have more big matches coming up, and we will have to continue to work hard."
A freshman from Caledonia, Michigan, Newhof is claiming the honor for the second time this season. The first time being in September for her performance at the Hope Invitational.
With freshman Madeline Brouwer, Newhof defeated Alma's Butterfield and McCarthy at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.
On Monday, she topped Brooke Butterfield of Alma at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
Against Olivet, she and freshman Sydney Ellsworth defeated Keely Cruz and Rachael Hager at No. 2 doubles, 8-5.
Newhof closed the week with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rachael Hager at No. 1 singles.
