ELMHURST, Ill. – The Calvin women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the year with a 9-0 sweep of the Blue Jays of Elmhurst. The Knights send Elmhurst to 3-8 on the year. The Friday match was the first road match of the year for Calvin.
"We played great in doubles tonight," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "I am happy with how we played today. It was a great start to this Chicago road trip."
The first point of the night came from the freshmen duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) at No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 sweep of Rachel Rettger and Katherine Wheeler.
Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) closed the book on doubles play with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles over Dacey Maglaque and Meg Simon.
Alexis Bonner made quick of Dacey Maglaque at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Brittney Statema picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles over Bridget Lopez.
Anna Asfour sank Rachel Rettger at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Leah Newhof saved two set points down 4-5, 15-40 to take the first set from Chiara Gaudio. She rolled in the second set, 7-5, 6-1.
Lark Foote rallied at No. 4 singles, with a 1-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory over Kathryn Wheeler.
Madeline Brouwer secured the sweep with a come-from0ehind victory at No. 2 singles with a 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 victory against Ysabel Gonzaga.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday at Wheaton.
