GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving program had a busy weekend as it split up its squad to compete in dual meets at the University of Chicago and at home against Olivet.
Calvin went 2-1 in dual meet competition Saturday.
At home, Calvin defeated Olivet 136-68. In Chicago, Calvin topped DePauw 195-88. The Knights then fell to Chicago 201.5-96.5 in a meeting of nationally-ranked teams. Calvin entered the competition ranked 19th while Chicago was ranked ninth.
In the win against Olivet, sophomore Kiara Bromly (Manistee, Mich./Manistee HS) took first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.54) and 100 backstroke (1:07.81). Senior Kara Komarek (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.54) and 200 IM (2:26.19). Senior Ka'Lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) was a winner in the 50 freestyle (25.93). Sophomore Katie Hulst (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) took first in the 100 freestyle (58.86) while sophomore Laura Barbachyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) won the 200 freestyle (2:09.61).
Calvin's 200 medley relay team of junior Kaitlin Terschak (Wildwood, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy), Komarek, Bromely and freshman Erica Stinton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took first place in a time of 2:00.48.
Calvin had a number of standout performances in its triangular in Chicago.
Junior Anna Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee HS) came up with a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.25) and took second in the 50 freestyle (25.10).
Senior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) had a banner day, winning the 100 freestyle (54.13), taking second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.73) and placing fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:27.49).
In the 1,000 freestyle, sophomore Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was second (11:16.17) while junior Emily Slenk (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was fourth (11:39.05). Ellens also placed sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:35.92). Slenk was fifth in the 400 IM (5:03.03).
Serino was part of a 2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 200 freestyle with sophomore Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) taking third (1:58.78) and senior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) taking fourth (1:59.18).
Murphy was second in the 5000 freestyle in a stellar time of 5:21.20.
Kutschke was part of a 2-3-6-7 Calvin finish as senior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third (25.13), freshman Anna Weber (North Royalton, Oh./North Royalton HS) taking sixth (25.44) and freshman Emilia Shokoohi (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) taking seventh (25.65).
Junior Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) had a strong showing in the 200 backstroke, taking fourth in a time of 2:14.52.
In the 100 butterfly, freshman Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was fourth (1:00.92) with freshman Grace Delcompare (Naples, Fl./Home School) placing third in the 400 IM (4:54.75).
In the diving competition, sophomore Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was third on the one-meter board (260.40) and
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of junior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS), Kutschke, Alyssa Oezer and Chao took first place in a time of 1:38.29. Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Chao, Kutschke, Edewaard and Gunderson placed second in 1:50.09.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo in a Senior Day dual meet scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
