Calvin Women's Swimming and Diving Opens Season Against Grand Valley State and Hillsdale

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin opened the season with a triangular with Division II Grand Valley State and Hillsdale.

The Knights defeated Hillsdale 159.5-71.5 and fell to Grand Valley State 161-78.

Ranked 16th nationally, Calvin had several notable performances.

Sophomore Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) won the 100 backstroke in a time of 59.31 while also placing third in the 200 IM (2:14.61). Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of junior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), junior Anna Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee HS), senior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) and senior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan HS) also took first place in a time of 1:39.82.

Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Chao, freshman Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Gunderson took second in 1:49.65.

Serino was second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.25) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:21.13).

Gunderson placed second in the 50 freestyle (24.70).

Senior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third in the 100 free (55.58). Sophomore Hannabeth Magnussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) was fourth on the three-meter diving board (211.95) while sophomore Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was third on the one-meter board (228.20).

In the 100 butterfly, freshman Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was fourth (1:01.33) while Sonday was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.54).

Senior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home School) had a big race in the 1,000 freestyle, placing fourth in a time of 11:14.46.

Calvin will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Relays next weekend in Holland.
