GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's swimming & diving team opened the 2017 Calvin Winter Invite on Thursday evening. The Knights won one event and stand in fourth place with 144 points.
"It is an odd start to the meet with how disjointed the start was," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "With everyone starting at various times of the night. We had some people starting two hours apart in their events. All day long, we had groups going in from start to finish. I thought on the women's relay, the energy was not quite up to where it needed to be, they still performed well. I believe that our A-relay should have a time to get them into the meet. Our miles, for being eight weeks into the season, I believe we were seven of nine for best times, by chunks of 20, 30, 40 seconds."
The Knights came out flying on Thursday evening in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Knights recorded a second-place finish at 7:34.97, faster than Grand Valley, Hillsdale and Findlay of NCAA Division II. Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) started the relay for Calvin and was followed by junior Madeline Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School). Senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) swam a split of 1:51.17, to push the Knights into second place.
The Calvin B-Team placed 10th and dropped 20 seconds off its time. The team of freshman Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian), sophomore Sydney Boyer (Bristol, Ind./Northridge), junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) clocked in at 1:54.44.
In the 1650-yard freestyle, Kendall Murphy became a member of the 17-minute club, placing seventh at 17:59.42. Her time is the eighth-fastest time in school history. Robyn Ellens finished in 11th place at 18:36.50.
The Knights return to the pool on Friday morning for the second day of the three-day invitational.
