Calvin Women's Swimming and Diving Has Stellar Evening at MIAA Relays
MIAA RELAYS DIVING RESULTS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team came up with a strong set of performances at the annual MIAA Relays Friday night inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
Calvin took first place in all three freestyle relay events while finishing third or better in the remaining six events. Friday's competition was an unscored meet.

Highlighting the evening was the performance of Calvin's 500 progressive relay as the team of sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS), senior Abby Van Harn, junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan HS) and junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) took first place with an MIAA Relays record time of 4:45.87, breaking the previous record of 4:46.34 set by Kalamazoo in 2015.

Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Van Harn, Gunderson, junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) took first place in a time of 1:39.71, just missing an MIAA Relays record. The winning time also currently ranks eighth nationally in Division III women's swimming.

In the 1500 freestyle, Smith, junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) and Serino took first place with a time of 16:16.78.

Calvin's 200 butterfly relay of Gunderson, freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) and freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) was third in a time of 1:48.86. The Knights finished less than two-tenths of a second out of first place in a tight three-way finish for the lead.
In the 200 medley relay, junior Daniella Sugijanto (Walnut Creek, Ca./Northgate HS), Chao, Gunderson and Van Harn were second in 1:51.43. Calvin's 200 breaststroke relay team of junior Elysa Wolf (Austin, Tx./Regents School of Austin), freshman Kelly Makela (Boise, Id./Boise HS), Mattson and freshman Katie Hulst (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was third (2:16.58).

Calvin's 400 individual medley relay team of Chao, Murphy, Smith and Slenk placed third (4:20.76).

Calvin also competed in the mixed 200 medley relay as the co-ed team of Ben Holstege, Lensing, freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second with a time of 1:40.81, finishing three-hundreths of a second behind the winning team from Albion.

The MIAA Relays also featured mixed diving competition. In the one-meter diving competition, Calvin helped produce two of the top three scores. Freshman Alex Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) combined with Hope's Kyle Weck to place second on the one-meter board (194.10) while senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Oh./Solon HS) and Colin Grogan of Kalamazoo took third (192.20).

On the three-meter board senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) and Kevin Franz of Hope took second (228.90). Moentmann and Grogan were third with a score of 208.70).
"We came out swinging," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "It's great to see early-season speed. That's something we take pride in. We had good energy, good team energy and good performances. Overall it was just a win-win night for us."
 
Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it hosts a quadrangular with Albion, Carthage and Ohio Northern at the Venema Aquatic Center.
