Calvin Women's Soccer Goes Works Overtime Out West in Posting 1-1 Tie With Pacific Lutheran

TACOMA, Wash. - Calvin remained unbeaten and closed out a successful weekend in the Pacific Northwest, battling host Pacific Lutheran to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Saturday evening.

Calvin improves to 3-0-1 on the year. The contest marked Calvin's second overtime match in as many nights as the Maroon and Gold claimed a 1-0 overtime win over Puget Sound Friday evening.

Saturday's match against Pacific Lutheran provided even play as the two teams traded goals just over three minutes apart early in the first half.

Pacific Lutheran (1-1-2) struck for a goal in the 14th minute of play but Calvin sophomore Maria Vanderlei (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) netted the equalizer in the 17th minute. The goal was the second of the year for Vanderlei and came on an assist from senior Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich./Grandville Calvin Christian HS).

Both teams fired shots at the opposition in the second half. Calvin threatened in the closing minutes of regulation, firing four shots at goal in the final four minutes including a shot by sophomore Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) that was saved by the Pacific Lutheran goalkeeper with two seconds left in regulation.

Pacific Lutheran had two shots at goal in overtime while Calvin had one. The host Lutes held a slim 12-11 shots at goal advantage in the match.

Sophomore Amy Kliewer had four saves in goal for Calvin.

"Pacific Lutheran is a good team and put a lot of pressure on us," said Calvin women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "I'm pleased with how our group competed and responded after going down a goal. We learned a lot about ourselves both on and off the field during this quick trip. We have to get back to work this week for a challenging opponent in Wheaton on Wednesday."

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Wheaton (Il.) at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
