Alma, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team fell to Alma, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard. A late Alma goal in the competitive contest lifted the home team to victory.
In the first meeting of the season between the two teams, the Knights claimed a 4-0 win.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the MIAA. Alma improves to 3-9-2 overall.
The Knights came out strong, logging five shots on goal in the first six minutes of play. Despite the early pressure from Calvin, the Scots got on the board first when Amanda Mladenovski scored from 35 yards out.
Calvin knotted the score before halftime as freshman Kali Mouw (Avon, N.Y./Avon Central) capitalized in the 41st minute off a scrum in front of the net.
At the halftime break, the Knights held a 9-5 shots advantage.
The Knights took the lead in the 66th minute, as senior Emily VanVeldhuisen (Brookeville, Md./Washington Christian Academy) converted on a penalty kick opportunity. Calvin's advantage was short-lived, as Alma's Whitnee Foote tied the game two minutes later.
Alma's Mladenovski scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
Final shots were 15-11 in favor of Calvin. Mouw led the Knights with six shots, including two shots on goal.
The Knights are back in action on Wednesday when they host rival Hope College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
