NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Calvin women's soccer team moved into third place in the MIAA with a 3-0 victory at Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon. The Knights improve to 9-7-1 on the year and 8-4-1 in MIAA action. Calvin is three points ahead of Alma in fourth place. Saint Mary's falls to 1-14 and 0-13 in MIAA play.
"Winning always feels good," said head coach Mark Recker. "We were on the road again and we picked up another victory, which is always good. I thought that we relied on our depth tonight. I feel that we did a good job of jumping on them early in the first half and created a cushion and closed it out the rest of the way."
Senior Kailey Jo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) got the Knights on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute with a header off of a cross from sophomore Bekah Maguire (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian).
A minute later, sophomore Kali Mouw (Avon, N.Y./Avon Central) gave Calvin a 2-0 lead with an arcing shot from 22 yards out. Junior Sydney Barcey (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) was credited with an assist.
In the 20th minute, freshman Whitney Koets (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) put the ball in the back of the net with a two-touch shot that kept low and past the Saint Mary's keeper. Sydney Barcey won back possession from the defender and passed the ball to Koets.
The Calvin defense held strong on Saturday and recorded the sixth shutout of the season.
The Knights recorded 23 shots on the Belles, 11 of those were on goal. Sophomore Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) faced only two shots on Saturday, neither of which were on goal.
The Maroon and Gold forced 10 corners against Saint Mary's, the Belles only notched one.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they host Alma at Zuidema Field for a key MIAA matchup.
