GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - On Tuesday afternoon, the Calvin women's soccer team hosted Trine in the teams' second matchup of the season. The Knights snapped their four-match winless streak, defeating the Thunder 1-0.
The Knights entered the contest 5-6-1 overall, with a 4-3-1 conference mark, while the Thunder held a 2-6-2 overall record, sitting at 2-6-0 in MIAA play.
In the first meeting of the year between the two teams, the Knights took home a 5-2 victory, backed by a strong offensive effort by senior Brianna Russell (Plainwell, MI/Delton-Kellogg HS) who recorded a hat-trick.
In Tuesday's match, Russell scored her forth against the Thunder, her seventh of the season, to put the Knights up 1-0. In the 17th minute, Camie Rietberg (Wyoming, MI/Calvin Christian HS) crossed the ball to Russell who sent it into the bottom left corner of the net.
With just over one minute left in the first half, the Thunder saw a two-on-one chance, but were unable to capitalize as they were called offside.
At halftime, shots were 8-3 in favor of the Knights.
Despite a competitive second half, with multiple scoring chances for the Thunder, Russell's goal proved to be the only goal of the afternoon.
Calvin outshot Trine 15-7 in the victory. Goalkeeper Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Eastern HS) made five saves.
"We are happy to get the win and pick up three points in the (league) standings," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "We are coming off a tough stretch of games and it was important to get a positive result which we did today. We have a little time to regroup and refocus and our goal is to come out with renewed vigor in our next game."
The Knights are back in action on October 12 at Albion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
