Calvin Women's Soccer Edged by Kalamazoo in 2-1 Overtime Thriller

After claiming an overtime win at Kalamazoo a year ago Calvin had the tables turned on itself Thursday night as the Hornets knocked off the Knights 2-1 in an overtime thriller.

The victory keeps Kalamazoo (3-0-1 MIAA) tied with Hope atop the MIAA standings while Calvin (2-2-0 MIAA) falls into a tie for fourth place in the league table with Alma.

Calvin (3-3-0 overall) struck first on Thursday night as senior Carly Veenstra (Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) whipped in a rebound shot in the 72nd minute. The goal was the third of the year for Veenstra and came off a rebound shot by senior Brianna Russell (Plainwell/Delton-Kellogg HS) that caromed off the post came back to Veenstra.

Kalamazoo (4-2-1 overall) leveled the score just two minutes later on a goal by Sarah George.

Veenstra later had a pair of shots at goal in the 88th minute that sailed wide.

In overtime, Kalamazoo pressed the attack and was awarded a penalty kick after a Calvin foul in the box 2:09 left in the first overtime session.

Katie Sorensen placed the penalty kick into the back of the net, giving the Hornets the win.

"We had a great team effort tonight," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "It was disappointing to lose on a penalty kick but we did what we had to do. We played hard throughout and we gave ourselves a chance to win. That is all you can ask for as a coach."

Kalamazoo finished with a 15-7 shots at goal advantage. Sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) had five saves in net for the Knights.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the Adrian Bulldogs at noon.
