NAPERVILLE, Il. - Calvin dropped a heartbreaking 13-12 overtime match at North Central College Saturday afternoon.
North Central (13-2) scored the tying goal with 37 seconds remaining and then connected on the game-winning goal as time expired in the first overtime session to win the game in sudden-death fashion.
Calvin (10-6 overall) stormed out to a 4-1 lead in the opening moments of the first half with junior Jaime Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) providing two of the early scores.
North Central then went on an 8-1 scoring run to take a 9-5 lead. Calvin answered with goals from junior Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and Van De Burg to trail 9-7 at halftime.
Calvin continued the momentum in the second half, building an 11-10 lead. Freshman Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) scored a pair of goals in the run. Senior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) gave Calvin an 11-10 lead on a goal with 15:21 remaining. After North Central tied the game, Van De Burg responded with a goal on a free position shot to give the Knights a 12-11 lead with 6:03 left in regulation.
Calvin kept the Cardinals at bay over the next five-and-a-half minutes with senior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) making three consecutive saves including two with the Knights down a player because of a yellow card.
With an extra attacker, North Central finally broke through, scoring a goal with 37 seconds remaining. The goal was the first allowed by the Knights in 10-and-a-half minutes.
Calvin won the ensuing draw control but could not find a shot on goal, sending the contest into overtime.
In overtime, Calvin had a free position shot that was saved. The Knights also committed a shot clock violation inside the final minute. North Central then scored at the buzzer to win the game.
North Central outshot Calvin 35-23. Sophomore Megan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) had seven saves in 27:32 of action while Chalfant had 11 saves in 35:28 of time in net.
Van De Burg and Gilbert had four goals apiece. Mesman, senior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Slachter and senior Genevieve Schneeman (Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS) all had one goal. Senior Skylynn Gyuro (Warwick, N.Y./Storm King School) tallied three assists. Freshman Drew Jansma (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) won 12 draw controls. Van De Burg was credited with six ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Trine at 7 p.m. on Senior Night at Zuidema Field.
