Calvin Women's Lacrosse Downs the Dutch in Rivalry Matchup

HOLLAND, Mich. - Calvin used a quick start to propel itself to a 7-5 rivalry victory at Hope Tuesday night.

Calvin (10-4 overall, 5-1 MIAA) scored the first three goals of the game to grab the early momentum. Hope came back to tie the game on two occasions but the Knights responded which included a pair of goals by senior Jaime Van De Burge (Alto, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) inside the final six minutes of the game to pull away for the win.

Calvin is now 10-1 all-time against Hope since the Knights became a varsity program in 2013 and have now won nine straight against their rivals dating back to the 2014 season.

The Knights now sit in third place in the MIAA standings, a half-game behind second place Saint Mary's which will bring a 5-0 record to Calvin on Friday for a pivotal 3:30 p.m. conference match.

Senior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got Calvin off to a 2-0 lead with a pair of free position goals in the opening 12 minutes. Senior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) then fired in a shot off a pass from junior Jaime Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with 15:27 left in the first half.

Hope fought back with a pair of quick goals by Carly Pieri inside the five-minute mark of the first half. Tilma gave the Knights a boost however by whipping in her second goal of the game with just 1:45 left in the half on another feed from Van De Burg.

A defensive struggle ensued for the first third of the second half before Hope broke through for goals from Pieri and Rachel Elder to knot the score at 4-4.

Slachter fought through heavy traffic to give Calvin a 5-4 lead with 15:41 remaining but Hope tied the game on a goal by Jane Ragains with 6:36 remaining.

With the game on the line, Van De Burg stepped up to score pair of clutch goals, whirling through a heavy thicket of defenders and whipping in a goal with 5:59 left and then again with 3:14 left on the clock.

With a 7-5 lead, the Knights were able to win the ensuing draw control and were able to bleed a minute off the block. Calvin then regained the ball on a Hope turnover and killed off the final minute of play.

Calvin finished with a 35-25 shots at goal advantage. Calvin won the 50-50 game, scooping up 31 ground balls to Hope's 20. Senior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) had a stellar game with 12 saves on 17 shots on goal.

Junior Sarah Hall (Harare, Zimbabe/Chisipite Senior School) had one of her finest games in a Calvin uniform with eight ground balls and three draw controls. Senior Alyssa Gagnon (Minooka, Il./Minooka HS) also played with a passion, securing seven ground balls. Gagnon was part of a Calvin defense that also included senior Elizabeth Wiley (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian HS). Wiley chalked up five ground balls.
