ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team ended spring break on a high note on Friday. The Knights went Golden Bear hunting and downed Western New England, 15-6. The Maroon and Gold improve to 2-4 on the year, with the victory.
"It has been a tough week for the team," said head coach Blake Boehm. "They put in a good week of practice and worked through some challenges against some east-coast programs. Today was the culmination of their efforts. They were focused and executed the game plan well. We still have some kinks to work out, but we are happy with where we are at this point in the season."
The Knights opened the game on an 8-0 run, featuring a balanced attack in the scoring.
After a WNE goal, the Knights responded with four of their own. Emma Verrett notched her second goal of the morning off a pass from sophomore Sarah Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe / Chisipite Senior School). Lauryn Slachter scored on a free position shot and Kelly Pepper scored the final two Calvin goals of the half.
The Golden Bears went on a 4-0 run, but junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) scored the final goal of the game with 1:05 remaining.
Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo. / Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) recorded four saves in the win.
Senior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led Calvin with six draw controls.
Calvin finishes the non-conference portion of the schedule on Wednesday against Lawrence Tech.
