Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With 16-5 Victory Over Asbury

WILMORE, KY - The Calvin women's lacrosse team opened its 2017 campaign in winning fashion, defeating NAIA opponent Asbury University 16-5 Friday afternoon.

Calvin scored the first six goals of the game and never looked back. The Knights led 7-1 at halftime and scored nine second half goals to cement the victory.

Sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wycoff, NJ/Indian Hills HS) and senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Il./Hinsdale Central HS) led the scoring charge as Pepper had five goals and two assists and Cefaratti four goals.

Junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) had two goals and two assists while sophomore Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had two goals. Freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) and junior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) had one goal apiece.

Freshman Jaimie Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a team-high six ground balls.

Sophomore Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) had three saves in goal for the Knights.

"This was a great start to the season for us," said Calvin head women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "The team came out strong from the beginning, stayed focused on achieving our objectives, and really protected each and every one of our possessions. I'm encouraged by how we played and excited for our next game."

Calvin is scheduled to face Georgetown (Ky.) on Saturday at noon.
