Calvin Falls to St. Mary's in a Closely Contested Battle

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team fell to Saint Mary's (Ind.) in a thrilling conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena. 

The Belles came out tough at they went on an 8-0 run to start the game. Freshman Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) knocked down a three-pointer to get the Knights on the board to make it 8-2. The Belles knocked down a back-to-back baskets, but Calvin responded with some field goals of their own including a three from freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian)to make it a 12-7 game. The two teams rallied back and forth exchanging points and the quarter closed out with a buzzer jump shot from freshman Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergreen, Co. / Evergreen) to make it a 24-18 game with St. Mary's leading. 

St. Mary's came out on fire in the second quarter knocking down a jump shot and three-pointer to extend its lead. Vander Zwaag knocked down a jump shot for the Knights, but the Belles continued to pull ahead and take a 15-point lead. Junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) knocked down two three-pointers to help tighten the Belles lead to within seven. The two teams exchanged points as the Knights began to rally, and freshman Abbie Cooley hit a jump shot at the buzzer to make it a three-point contest as the Belles held their lead 42-39.  

Both teams came out battling in the third quarter as they rallied back-and-forth. Cooley took one to the hoop to tighten the St. Mary's lead to within one. The Belle's put up two free throws, but Calvin answered with a jump shot to put it right back to a one-point game. The two teams continued to take turns scoring, and once again GalanBrowne knocked down a buzzer layup and Calvin took the lead 55-54 for the first time in the contest. 

The Belles started the quarter off with a free throw to make it a tie ballgame. Both teams looking for a win, continued to rally back and forth regaining the lead. St. Mary's began to pull ahead taking the 72-63 lead. Senior Becca Richards Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) swished in a three-pointer to tighten it to within four-points.  The Knights fought hard to pull out the win, but they fell short as the Belles walked away with a 76-69 victory. 

Leading the Knights was Timmer with 22 points and nine rebounds. Vander Zwaag recorded 16 points and five assists. Richards had ten points and five assists. 

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Trine University to take on the Thunder at 7:30 p.m.
