GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team fell to 11th-ranked Trine University 62-50 in a conference match Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena.
Trine came out in the first quarter taking the early 8-2 lead. A pair of jump shots from Calvin tightened the score to within one point. Trine tried to pull away, but Calvin stuck in it as the teams exchanged points and the quarter closed out with the Knights trailing by two, 18-16.
The Thunder started out the second quarter with a run of five points to take a seven-point lead. Calvin reponded with a 10-0 run which included a pair of three-pointers from seniors Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids Mich./ Grand Rapids Christian) and Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./ Port Huron Northern) which gave the Knights the lead for the first time of the contest as the half closed out with Calvin on top 28-23.
Trine looking to regain the lead, came out in the second half with an 8-0 run to lead 31-28. Both teams exchanged points as the score remained tight, but it was the Thunder who closed out the quarter with a 39-34 lead.
Trine came out in the fourth quarter assertively as the Thunder went on an 8-0 run to take a 13-point lead. The Knights battled back, as Warners put up a pair of three-pointers to tighten the margin back to seven. Trine responded with seven points of its own as it closed out the game with the 62-50 win.
Leading the Knights in scoring was Warners with 17 points. Richards recorded 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia Mich. / South Christian) had 10 points, 5 rebounds and three blocks. Junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) had 13 rebounds.
Calvin will host Olivet Tuesday night in a conference contest. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
