HANCOCK, Mich. - A youthful Calvin women's basketball team recorded a dramatic 70-68 victory over Concordia-Moorhead Saturday night to remain unbeaten on the young season.
Calvin overcome a 68-61 deficit with 3:59 remaining by scoring the final nine points of the game. Freshman Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian HS) provided the go-ahead scoring, converting a driving layup with 14 seconds remaining to give Calvin a 69-68 lead. The Knights were then able to get a defensive stop with freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) snaring a rebound with four seconds and then converting a free throw to help seal the win.
Timmer had a monster double-double performance, scoring 26 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Coors had 21 points, six assists and four rebounds. Freshman Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen HS) had 13 points including a pair of free throws with a minute left to play that brought the Knights within 68-67.
Freshman Maddie Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) tallied 10 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Calvin held a 45-38 rebounding advantage. The Knights led 35-33 at halftime but were outscored 23-19 in the third quarter, setting up the frantic fourth quarter finish.
Calvin will now prepare to travel to a tournament hosted by Wisconsin-Lutheran next weekend. The Knights (2-0) are scheduled to face Wisconsin-Lacrosse on Friday and host Wisconsin-Lutheran on Saturday.
