Calvin Women's Basketball Claims Conference Victory Over Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Calvin claimed a 67-59 conference victory at Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon to move back into third place in the MIAA standings.
 
Calvin (15-9 overall, 10-5 MIAA) fought off an upset-minded Hornet team playing in front of a Senior Day crowd at the Anderson Athletic Center.
 
Calvin led 36-31 at halftime and extended its lead to 48-32  midway through the third quarter as sophomore Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) swished a three-pointer to cap off an 11-3 run.
 
Kalamazoo (9-14 overall, 6-8 MIAA) closed out the third quarter on a 14-3 run however to trail just 51-46 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
The fourth quarter featured a defensive battle with Kalamazoo taking a 59-58 lead on a jumper by Isabelle Clark with 3:08 left to play.
 
Calvin sophomore Nicole Meyer (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower HS) answered with a layup in traffic to put the Knights up 60-59. 
 
The Knights kept the Hornets off the board the rest of the way while also sealing the game with 7 of 8 shooting at the free throw line. 
 
Calvin placed five players in double-digits in scoring led by senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) who popped in 16 points and dished out four assists to go with four rebounds. Spayde was 3 of 4 from three-point range.
 
Minderhoud had a strong game with 15 points and five boards. She was 4 of 9 from three-point territory. 
 
Junior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) had 14 points and was 3 of 6 from three-point range.
 
Senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Meyer both had double-doubles. Luurtsema had 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with four assists. Meyer had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Kalamazoo was paced by Emily Kozal with 22 points.
 
Calvin was 10 of 23 (.435) from three-point range. Kalamazoo was 10 of 26 (.385) from deep. The Hornets held a 45-39 rebounding edge but turned the ball over 13 times.
 
Calvin will celebrate its own Senior Night next Wednesday when it hosts Olivet at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
