Women’s Basketball Tripped Up at Albion

ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team came up short on Saturday at Albion. The Knights fell to the Britons, 72-67. The loss moves Calvin to 14-8 and 9-4 in MIAA play.

The Knights led early on Saturday, pushing the lead up to 13-4. Junior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) led the Knights in the first five minutes with five points.

A three-point basket from senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) gave the Knights a 20-14 lead after the first quarter.

The Britons cut the Calvin lead to three points on two occasions in the second quarter. Leading 33-30, Ali Spayde and sophomore Nicole Meyer (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) drained three-point baskets to give Calvin a 39-30 lead at halftime.

Albion doubled up the Knights in the third quarter 22-11 to lead 52-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

Becca Richards started the fourth quarter with a three-point basket to give the Knights a 53-52 lead.

After a 4-0 Albion run, Calvin took the lead back with baskets from Nicole Meyer and Ali Spayde.

That was the final lead of the day for Calvin. The Britons went on an 8-0 run to get some separation.

The Knights trimmed the deficit to 70-67 with baskets from Ali Spayde and senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian).

Maija Gillum secured the 72-67 victory with a pair of free throws.

Ali Spayde led all players with 28 points on Saturday.

Becca Richards tallied 18 points in the loss.

Bre Luurtsema recorded her sixth double-double with 10 points and game-high 10 rebounds.

Nicole Meyer led the game with six assists, she also had eight rebounds and seven points.

The Knights look to bounce back on Wednesday at home against arch-rival Hope.
