Women’s Basketball Blasts Alma

ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin women's basketball team secured the season sweep over the Scots of Alma in convincing fashion on Wednesday night. The Knights blasted the Scots 80-37 to improve to 14-7 on the year and 9-3 in MIAA play. The Scots sink to 2-18 and 1-17 in MIAA action. The victory secures a spot in the MIAA Tournament for the Knights.

The Knights started the game with a blistering 18-0 run and never looked back. Senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) led the Knights with seven points in the run. Calvin did not allow a point until the 2:17 mark of the first quarter. The first quarter ended with a 9-0 run from the Knights to finish at 27-2. Senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) led the Knights with 10 points.

Junior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) started the scoring in the second quarter with a layup. The Knights outscored the Scots 15-11 in the second quarter to head into halftime with a 42-13 lead. Bre Luurtsema and Becca Richards both notched six points in the second.

Bre Luurtsema started the scoring in the third quarter with three points the old-fashioned way. Alma cut the Calvin lead to 48-23 with 2:30 remaining, but the Knights closed the quarter on a 12-0 run. Ali Spayde chipped in six of the 12 points.

Six different Knights scored in the fourth quarter, including five off the bench. Sophomore Jordyn Schluter (Novi, Mich./Mercy) led Calvin six points. After the Scots started the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run, sophomore Nicole Meyer (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) stopped the streak with a layup. With 1:44 remaining, freshman Erin Fankhauser (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) recorded her first points at Calvin with a layup.

Bre Luurtsema led the game with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds. Wednesday was her fifth double-double of the year and 17th in her career.

Ali Spayde finished with 16 points and five assists. Following Spayde was Kara Minderhoud at 14 points on the evening.

Nicole Meyer posted eight points, six rebounds and two steals.

The six rebounds for Becca Richards ties a career high.

The six points for Jordyn Schluter were her first at Calvin.

Freshman Erin Van Beek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) earned her first assist for the Knights on Wednesday. Sophomore Alexus Thomas (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Christian Academy) finished with a career-high two assists. The three assists for junior Logan Winton (Fairview, Mich./Fairview) were also a career-high.

Freshman Meredith Bult (West Chicago, Ill./Wheaton Academy) flexed her muscles and recorded her first rebound at Calvin. As did freshman Annaka Ediger (Hudsonville, Mich./Hamilton) on Wednesday evening.

The Knights held a 38-27 rebounding advantage on Wednesday. Calvin forced 26 turnovers in the victory.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday for a key MIAA matchup at Albion.
