No. 6 Trine Edges Women’s Basketball on Final Shot

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin women's basketball team was nipped at No. 6 Trine on Saturday afternoon, 50-47. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Knight and moves Calvin to 4-4 on the year. Trine remains perfect on the year at 9-0.

The Knights jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) had five points in the early Calvin run; junior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) had four points. Calvin outscored Trine in the first quarter, 13-5.

The two teams exchanged baskets to start the second quarter. Trine trimmed the Calvin lead to 17-16 with 4:51 left in the half. The Maroon and Gold finished the half on an 8-0, with three-points baskets from Ali Spayde and junior Sarah Cassel (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North).

Calvin went into halftime with a 30-21 lead.

The Knights used a 7-0 run to push the lead up to 37-23 with 5:37 left in the third quarter.

Trine continued to chip away in the fourth quarter and tied the game with 54 seconds remaining. Montana Martin hit a shot with the shot clock expiring with five seconds left to give Trine its first lead of the game. Calvin was unable to get a final shot off and fell 50-47.

Ali Spayde led all players with 19 points on Saturday. Senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) posted a game-high nine rebounds and tallied eight points and five assists. Rachel Warners had a solid Saturday with 14 points and five rebounds.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday against Aquinas at Van Noord Arena.
