NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Calvin women's basketball team recorded its first victory of the season on Friday evening. The Knights defeated St. Olaf in the first round of the College Town Classis at Carleton, 52-38. The Knights improve to 1-3 on the year, the Oles fall to 1-4 in 2017.
The Knights jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first three minutes to start the Minnesota road trip. The run was aided by five from senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian). The Oles used an 11-1 run to close the quarter with a 17-13 lead.
The Calvin offense exploded in the second quarter and opened with a 6-0 and forced the Oles to call a timeout after Calvin started the quarter on a 16-2 run. Calvin had a balanced attack during the run, with five different players scoring. After holding St. Olaf to only two points in the first seven minutes, the closed the half on am 8-3 run, to head into halftime with Calvin lead, 32-27.
Senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) opened the third quarter scoring with a jump shot from the right side. She then pushed the lead to 36-27 with a lay-up. Junior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) snapped a 5-0 St. Olaf run with a lay-up basket. The Knights headed into the final quarter leading, 38-32.
The Knights owned the fourth quarter on Friday, outscoring the Oles 14-6. Rachel Warners started the scoring 12 seconds in with a layup. With under seven minutes to play, St. Olaf cut the lead to 40-34, with Ali Spayde pushing the lead back up to eight, twenty seconds later. The Knights pushed the lead up to 12 points with free throws from Bre Luurtsema and Ali Spayde. A jump shot from Rachel Warners gave the Knights the largest lead of the night at 14 points. The Knights made their free throws and finished the Oles at 52-38.
The Maroon and Gold recorded eight assists on 15 baskets on Friday. Bre Luurtsema led all players with three assists.
Ali Spayde led all players with 21 points. She led all players with three three-point baskets and made all six of her free throws.
Rachel Warners led the Knights with 11 rebounds and was a point short of a double-double with nine points. Warners led all players with four steals. Bre Luurtsema recorded 13 points, draining nine free throws and notching eight rebounds.
The Knights will play Carleton on Saturday for the College Town Classic crown. Carleton defeated Crown College, 73-39. Carleton is 2-1 on the year.
