ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin women's basketball team fell in the championship game of the MIAA Tournament on Saturday at Trine. The Thunder claimed their first MIAA Tournament title with a 49-42 victory. The Knights are now 22-5 on the season and will have to wait until Monday to see if they earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Trine moves to 24-2 on the year and holds the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The first quarter saw the two teams fight a strong defensive battle. Junior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) gave the Knights a 12-11 lead with 2:17 remaining with a layup. The Thunder would close the quarter on a 5-0 run, aided by three free throws.
The Knights would fight back in the second quarter, with senior Anna Timmer scoring the first four points of the quarter and senior Lauren Goldthorpe (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) making a jump shot to tie the game at 18 at the 8:06 mark. Neither team would score until there was 2:29 left in the half, when Montana Martin made two free throws for Trine. Calvin would close the half on a 6-2 run to lead 24-22 and halftime.
Calvin would hold onto the lead for a majority of the third quarter, but Trine took the lead back for good closing the quarter on a 10-0 run, to take a 36-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
Trailing 31-38, Calvin would trim the deficit to a point with a pair of layups from Anna Timmer and a pair of free throws from junior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian).Trine would push the lead up to five. A jump shot from Ali Spayde made it a 42-20 game with 3:50 left, but that would be as close as the Knights would get with the Thunder closing the game on a 9-2 run.
Anna Timmer recorded her 19th double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. Timmer now holds the school record for rebounds in a season with 316 and double-doubles with 19. Ali Spayde finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Lauren Goldthorpe was leading the team with eight points before she left the game due to an injury. Sophomore Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) led the Knights with two assists.
Calvin held a 41-35 edge on the boards on Saturday night.
