Calvin Women's Basketball Captures Lakeland Tipoff Tournament Title - Ali Spayde Named Tournament MVP

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Calvin women's basketball team captured the championship of the Lakeland Tipoff Tournament on Saturday, defeating host Lakeland 58-39 in the championship game.

The Knights (3-0) limited the host Muskies (1-2) to 26.4 percent field goal shooting while outrebounding Lakeland 44-30.

Calvin used an 18-3 second quarter spurt to build a 30-11 halftime lead and never looked back.

Junior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) scored a game-high 20 points, en route to being named tournament MVP. Senior Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) just missed her third consecutive double-double, notching 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) came up with a double-double on Saturday, recording 10 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double was the eighth of her career.

Senior Lauren Goldthorpe (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle HS) pumped in 12 points and was 7-for-7 at the free throw line.

Spayde, Luurtsema and Timmer were all named to the all-tournament team.

Calvin will now prepare to host Manchester University Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
