HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin softball team fell on Monday afternoon in the NCAA Regional Finals. The Knights lost 6-9 and 0-2 on Monday afternoon at Hope. The games were the sixth and seventh games of the rivalry showdown in 2018. The Knights finish the year with a school record of 32-10.
"It certainly is not the way we wanted to end our season but the results don't take away from the success and records we set this year," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "Our program took great strides this season. Our three seniors were instrumental in helping to improve our culture and I believe they finished their careers by leaving everything they had on the field. I couldn't be prouder of the 20 young women in our dugout."
Hope responded with four runs in the second inning.
Calvin took the lead back with a four-run third inning.
Grace Stock started the scoring with a single to right field the scored junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian). Abby Colon struck again with a single to right field to score senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Senior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) then doubled to center field to score Abby Colon and Grace Stock.
The Flying Dutch regained the lead with the next four runs.
Junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) finished game one with 11 strikeouts.
Hope scored the only two runs of game two in the first inning.
The Knights threatened but were unable to get a run on the scoreboard.
Freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) held Hope to only four hits in game two. Borst had two strikeouts in game two.
The Calvin senior class finished with 85 victories and finished with 32 wins in its senior year, compared to 10 in 2015. The Knights advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years and the MIAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
