CLERMONT, Fla. – The Calvin softball team picked up two victories on Saturday on the first day of the PFX Spring Games. The Knights started the day with a 5-1 victory over Allegheny. Calvin closed the day with a thrilling 14-13 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. The Maroon and Gold are now 5-1 on the year.
The Knights started the day against the Gators of Allegheny College.
Calvin struck first in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs. Sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) homered to left field and sophomore Casey Lawler (Novi, Mich./Novi) was walked with the bases loaded, scoring sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg).
The Alligators scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning.
Anna Gernant dominated on the circle, recording nine strikeouts.
Maddie DeGroot finished with a game-high three hits.
The Knights started the second game with an offensive explosion in the first inning. Maddie DeGroot and Rachel Borden scored on an error and freshman Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) hit a three-run homerun, scoring freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) and junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).. That was the first home run for Mumby at Calvin.
In the third inning, Jordan Van Eerden doubled to center field, scoring Kayla Groen and Kaley Frank. Freshman Bri Noorman (Jenison, Mich./Covenant Christian) would then hit her first home run at Calvin scoring freshman Jordan VanEerden (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Katie Mumby.
The Battling Bishops would take the lead back at 13-10 with an 11-run fourth inning.
Calvin would regain the lead with a four-run sixth inning. Kaley Frank singled to third base that scored Maddie DeGroot. Frank would later score on an error. Kayla Groen singled in the game-winning run in Jessica Brasser.
Anna Gernant recorded the victory in the circle and improved to 4-0 on the year. She picked up seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Rachel Borden tallied a game-high four hits.
The Knights return to action on Monday against Fontbonne and St. Catherine.
