ELSAH, Il. - The 10th-ranked Calvin men's cross country team received a preview of the NCAA III Championships competition course on Saturday as it competed at the Principia College Cowbell Classic. Principia will host the NCAA III Championships on November 18.
Competing in a loaded field of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin took ninth with a team score of 257 points.
Calvin was led by senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) who finished 21st on the 8K course in a time of 25:35.
Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) also ran in his home state on Saturday and responded by placing 37th individually with a time of 25:54.
Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 65th (26:16) and junior Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home Schooled) 70th in 26:17.
Senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was 74th in 26:21 with freshman teammate Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) right behind in 75th (26:21).
Sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korean/Seoul Foreign School) rounded out Calvin's top seven by placing 78th in 26:59.
Top-ranked North Central won Saturday's competition with a team score of 47 points. Isaac Cassani-Garcia was the individual race winner with a time of 24:41.
Calvin will now break until October 28 when it competes at the MIAA Championships hosted by Adrian College.
