Calvin Men's Cross Country Cruises at Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Calvin men's cross country team put together a superb afternoon at the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame Friday.

Competing in a field of Division I teams in the Gold Division, Calvin put together a performance that would have placed third in the final team standings. As the only Division III team in the field however, Calvin was not given a team score due to Division I cross country rules.

Calvin placed six runners in the top 57 spots led by the tandem of seniors Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) and Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Philipose took 14th with a time of 25:04 while DeJong was 15th in 25:07.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) had an outstanding race, finishing 30th in a time of 25:29 while junior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was 36th in 25:36.

Sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) had a career-day, placing 54th in 25:56. Freshman Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was close behind, finishing 57th in 25:59.

Senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) provided strong support. Rylaarsdam was 72nd (26:11) and Smith 76th (26:16).

Junior Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home Schooled) rounded out Calvin's finishers, placing 106th (26:51).

"I am extremely pleased with how our team ran today," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Our guys were not intimidated by the competition and ran like they belonged here. I thought up-and-down our lineup we ran extremely well and pushed each other. This was our best race so far of the season and it's a huge confidence booster for our team. We continue to improve and I am excited about what lies ahead for this group."

Temple University took first place in the Gold Division with a team score of 75 points.
