Calvin Men's Track and Field Sending Trio to NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Three members of the Calvin men's track and field team have qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Qualifying for the national meet from the Calvin men's team are senior Brendan VanHouten, junior Caleb Ferguson and sophomore Jonathan Ellis. The NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Competition is set to begin on Thursday and conclude Saturday afternoon.

BRENDAN VANHOUTEN - A native of Comstock Park and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, VanHouten is making his first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track And Field Championships. VanHouten will compete in both the hammer and discus throws. He is seeded 11th in the hammer (193-3) and 13th in the discus (166-6).

VanHouten is in the midst of a standout year of track and field. This winter, he was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Performer for indoor track and field after leading the Calvin men to an indoor league title. Earlier this month he was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Performer for outdoor track and field after winning a league title in the discus while placing second in the hammer and third in the shot put.

CALEB FERGUSON - A native of Naperville, Illinois, Ferguson is making his third straight trip to to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. A graduate of Neuqua Valley High School, Ferguson will compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase where he is seeded 20th (9:10.37). A year ago, Ferguson took seventh in the steeplechase at the national meet to claim NCAA III All-America honors. Earlier this month he captured the MIAA steeplechase title to earn a spot on the All-MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Team.

JONATHAN ELLIS - A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Ellis is making his first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He will compete in the 10,000 meter run where he is seeded 20th (30:33.86). Ellis was the MIAA champion in the 10,000 meters this spring with a time of 32:08.05 as he landed a spot on the All-MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Team.
