Calvin Men's Track and Field Takes Fifth at GVSU Mike Lints Open

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Calvin took fifth place at the GVSU Mike Lints Open on Saturday on the campus of Grand Valley State University.

Calvin piled up the points in the distance events to help build a fifth place total of 49.2 points.

Highlighting the meet for Calvin was junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) who won the 3,000 meter run with a career-best time of 8:33.29 which currently ranks 14th on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field performance list.

Johnson was one of four point-scorers for Calvin in the race as sophomore Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) was fifth (8:40.49), sophomore Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) seventh (8:42.78) and junior Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul International School) eighth (8:44.15).

In the 5,000 meter run, sophomore Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was second (15:54.85), senior Jonathan Randall (Hopkington, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) third (16:01.29), sophomore Charlie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth (16:02.45), freshman Nathan Klaasen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) sixth (16:24.64) and freshman William Terpstra (Lombard, Il./Timothy Christian HS) eighth (16:44.44).

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of junior Jacob Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS), sophomore Matthew Blanker (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and senior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) were fifth (3:29.59).

In the weight throw, senior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a career-best throw of 56-1 to place sixth. His throw ranks 24th on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field list. Sophomore Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) had a career-best throw of 54-8 ¾ to place seventh. He currently ranks 32nd on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field list.

Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the Baldwin-Wallace William Taraschke Invitational.
