Calvin Men's Track and Field Takes Second at Calvin Tune-Up Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team took second at its own Calvin Tune-Up Invitational, posting a team score of 100 points. Davenport took first place with 109 points.

Junior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) took home a win for Calvin in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.76. Senior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was fifth with a time of 16.41.

Senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took home a win in the 400 meters with a time of 49.69. Junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was sixth in a time of 51.06.

In the 3,000 meters, junior Jim Van Dyke (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fifth in a time of 9:45.84.

Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of Buteyn, junior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS), junior Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) and senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) was fourth in a time of 45.33.

In the 1500 meters, freshman Charlie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) powered his way to a fifth place time of 4:26.12.

Calvin picked up points from sophomore Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) in the 400 meter hurdles as he placed second in a time of 57.44 while Williams was seventh in 1:01.93.

In the 200 meters, Valentine took fifth in a time of 22.96.

The Knights also picked up points in the field events. Sophomore Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was fifth in the javelin (137-8).

Sophomore Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) was second in the long jump (21-5) and high jump (6-1). Barents was eighth in the long jump (20-0) and third in the triple jump (40-11).

In the shot put, junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh (45-4) and Wolfe eighth (44-9). VanHouten also placed sixth in the discus (155-6) and seventh in the hammer throw (167-3). In the pole vault, senior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was third (14-6) and sophomore Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) fourth (14-6).

On Friday, Calvin's distance runners competed at the Hillsdale Gina Relays.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was third in a season-best time of 9:18.93. His time currently ranks 17th on the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field performance list.

Sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) was 18th (9:45.82) and senior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) was 20th in a time of 9:51.75.

In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was 10th in a time of 14:56.32. Senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) was 15th (15:02.38), junior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass/Whitinsville Christian HS) was 18th (15:19.10).

Calvin will now prepare to compete at the MIAA Championships May 3 and 4 at Adrian College.
