Calvin Men's Track and Field Team Comes Up With Big Performances at Last-Chance Meets

The Calvin men's track and field team put together a sterling set of performances Thursday and Friday at last-chance meets hosted by North Central College and Grand Valley State University.

At the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational Calvin sparkled on the track. On Thursday night, junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) had a career-best time of 14:20.18 that was good for second place individually. The time places Philipose 10th on the NCAA III performance list.

Senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Il./Lake Country Lutheran HS) produced a time of 14:44.39 while freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) clocked a time of 15:10.47.

In the 10,000 meter run, senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had a career-best time of 31:16.62. Senior Robbie Hohlman (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) had a career-best time of 31:54.09.

On Friday, junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded a timte of 3:55.65 in the 1500 meters while senior Nathan Van Haitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) came in with a time of 4:01.65.

The Knights capped off the meet with a bang in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as freshman Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) clocked a career-best time of 9:08.69. His time was a personal-best by nearly 10 seconds and currently ranks 10th on the NCAA III performance list.

Senior Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) turned in a season-best time of 9:13.36 while freshman Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) justed missed a personal-best, clocking in at 9:20.84.

At Grand Valley State on Friday, sophomore Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) came up with a personal-best in the long jump, uncorking a leap of 23-0 1/2. The jump was a personal best by nearly a foot.

Sophomore Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded a personal-best throw of 157-2 in the discus. The throw currently ranks 32nd on the NCAA III performance list.

Also turning in a personal-best time was Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), sophomore James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS), junior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) as the quartet cruised in with a time of 3:18.27. The time eclipsed nearly two seconds off the relay's previous best mark.

Other notables included sophomore Jonathan Randall (Hopkington, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) taking third in the 5,000 meters (16:07.78) and freshman Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) placing seventh in the pole vault (14-7 1/4). In the 400 meter hurdles, freshman Sam Veentra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) came up with a time of 56.79 and junior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) a time of 57.57.
