MOLINE, Il. - Calvin split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday, falling to Augustana College 6-3 and coming back to top Edgewood 9-0.
In the opening loss to Augustana (Il.), Calvin grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Senior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezeula/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and sophomore Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) claimed an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Kyrus Tsai (Glenview, Il./Glenbrook South HS) and freshman Konner Shapiro (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South HS) also claimed an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Stallings was a 7-6, 6-3 winner at No. 3 singles. Augustana won in straight sets in the remaining five singles matches however to seal the win.
Calvin then came back to top Edgewood to claim its first dual match victory of the year. Senior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and Larrea were 8-6 winners at No. 1 doubles with senior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wisc./Wauwatosa East HS) and junior Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) winning 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Tsai and Shapiro then won at No. 3 doubles by default.
Freshman Brandon Johnson (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) was a 7-5, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles. Junior Owen Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles. Fahr pulled out a dramatic 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 3 singles. Benzel won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Tsai (No. 5 singles) and Shapiro (No. 6 singles) both won by default.
Calvin will now break until February 28 when it travels to Wisconsin-Lutheran for an 8 p.m. non-conference match.
