GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team advanced to the MIAA Tournament championship final with a 5-0 semifinal victory over Trine University Thursday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
Calvin (17-3) will host rival Hope (9-10) in the championship final Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
Calvin gained command of the match by sweeping all three doubles flights.
Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzman (Tarijia, Bolovia/Felipe Palazon) and senior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) picked up the first point of the match with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles for Calvin's second point.
Stallings went to work quickly in singles play to produce a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Castellanos Vaca Guzman clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
"I'm extremely proud of my team today," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "They came out ready to compete from the opening bell which was great to see. We are looking forward to a huge challenge tomorrow and the opportunity to play in a tournament championship match."
Calvin will be making its second straight appearance in the MIAA Tournament Championship final.
