GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team closed the regular season with a 7-2 victory over Adrian. With the victory, Calvin clinches the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Calvin finishes the regular season at 16-3 and 6-1 in MIAA play. Adrian falls to 8-9 and 4-3 in MIAA play. After winning his 200th victory with Calvin men's tennis on Wednesday, John Ross won his 500th victory at Calvin with 201 victories with men's tennis and 299 victories with the women's basketball program.
"It is a really nice win to play at home," said Calvin head coach John Ross. "It was a big win in front of our home fans. Adrian is a great opponent. It was a wonderful match and it was exciting. The biggest credit goes to our athletic training staff. We have had players who have been struggling with injuries and they were all able to play today."
The Bulldogs bit the Knights at No. 2 doubles to start the match.
Jason Wolters rolled over Kyle Haines at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) broke Ronald Ducharme at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
With the match tightening, Max Stallings secured the victory at No. 6 singles. Stallings sank Jon Rhind, 7-6, 6-2.
Adrian earned its second point at No. 2 singles.
David Brown and Matt Van Winkle closed senior day with a pair of three-set victories. Brown bounced Nathan Waterbury, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Van Winkle closed the book at No. 3 singles, defeating Tanner Wilcox, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Calvin will host either Trine or Alma on May 3 in the semifinal round of the MIAA Tournament. Hope will host Adrian in the other semifinal match.
