GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team won its fifth-straight match on Saturday afternoon. The Knights welcomed Illinois Tech to the Huizenga Indoor Tennis Courts and finished with an 8-1 victory. The victory propels Calvin to 6-1 and sends the Scarlet Hawks to 8-5 on the season.
"I am really proud of how our guys battled tonight," said head coach John Ross. "We knew that we were going to face a really tough and loose Illinois Tech team and we did. It all started with some great doubles and that carried over into singles. We will now focus on preparing for some really tough matches in Florida."
The first point of the day came at No. 3 doubles. The team of junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) cruised over Jack Pio and Connor Mullane, 8-1.
The Knights showed some grit at No. 1 doubles on Saturday. Trailing 6-7, the duo of senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St.Joseph) and junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) were able to break Franklin Zhong and Broderic Croonquist and take the match, 9-7.
Max Stallings started singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jack Pio at No. 6 singles.
At No. 4 singles, Jose Larrea made quick work of Abhishek Rana, 6-1, 6-1.
David Brown brushed off Adam Laitinen at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán captured a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over Franklin Zhong.
Jason Wolters recorded the final Calvin point of the night at No. 5 singles, slashing Broderic Croonquist, 6-0, 6-2.
The Scarlet Hawks took the final point of the evening at No. 2 singles.
The Knights return to action on March 19, in Orlando, Florida, when they play Elmhurst.
