Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Opens Season Against Grand Valley State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin opened its season with a 168-54 loss to Division II Grand Valley State. Grand Valley entered the meet ranked ninth in Division II while Calvin came in ranked 17th in Division III.

Sophomore Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman) won the 200 freestyle (1:40.98) and took third in the 500 freestyle (4:50.51).

Senior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) took second in the 100 backstroke (49.98) and led off Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that took second with a time of 1:24.89. He was joined on the relay by senior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS), senior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia HS) and Iturbe.

Calvin's 200 medley relay featured three Holstege brothers as Ben led off followed by junior Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), senior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./Chesapeake HS) and freshman Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) as it placed second in a time of 1:32.08.

Noah Holstege was fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.99).

Junior Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central HS) was fourth in the 200 IM (2:02.54) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.45).

In the 100 freestyle, freshman Trevor Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) was sixth (49.77). Junior Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) was fourth in the 1,000 freestyle (10:25.98). Senior Nate Olberding (Noblesville, Ind//Noblesville HS) was sixth in the 100 butterfly (54.97).

Calvin will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Relays next weekend in Holland.
