ALMA, Mich. - The third-ranked Calvin men's soccer team claimed a 6-0 conference victory at Alma Tuesday afternoon n a meeting of undefeated MIAA teams.
Calvin (11-1 overall, 3-0 MIAA) scored three goals in each half to pull away for the shutout victory. Alma (5-6 overall, 2-1 MIAA) suffered its first conference defeat.
Calvin peppered the Alma goal with a number of shots in the opening minutes and broke through in the 16th minute as junior Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored on a freed from senior Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS). The goal was the third of the year for Weldy.
In the 19th minute, junior Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) scored unassisted. The goal was his seventh of the season.
McCaw ripped in his team-leading 10th goal of the season just over a minute later on a pass from junior Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Senior Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) broke loose for goals in the 47th and 68th minutes of the second half with Weldy assisting on the first Witte goal.
Calvin finished with a 26-2 shots at goal advantage, outshooting the Scots 13-1 in each half.
Sophomore Chris Morrish (Bradenton, Fl./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) had one save in goal for Calvin in posting his sixth shutout of the season.
"I am really proud of the guys' willingness to come out and earn a result today," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Under tough conditions they found a way. Certainly there are some things we'll seek to improve but to get that kind of a result against Alma, which is incredibly gritty, speaks to the character of our guys."
Calvin will host Adrian on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
