KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin men's Lacrosse team defeated Kalamazoo 10-9 in overtime on Tuesday night.
Calvin took the early lead as senior Noah Boelens (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) found sophomore Jacob Gandara (Santa Clarita, Calif. / West Ranch) and he fired on in the net to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead.
Kalamazoo then went on a hot streak recording four straight goals to take the 4-1 edge.
The Knights then put a stop to the Hornets as Boelens connected with senior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind. / Heritage Christian) to tighten Kalamazoo's lead to within two.
The Hornets closed out the first quarter with one more goal to take the 5-2 lead.
With the second quarter underway, Kalamazoo recorded another goal to take a four-goal lead.
The Knights continued to battle as they scored two straight goals. Senior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) fired one in the back of the cage. Next, freshman Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi High School) found Gandara and he scored to make it a 6-4 contest.
Kalamazoo recorded one more goal in the first half to lead 7-4.
Calvin came out strong the second half as Bontreger connected with Boelens and he blasted on in the net.
Boelens on fire, recorded another goal minutes later to tighten Kalamazoo's lead to 7-6.
The two teams continued to exchange goals in the third quarter and as it closed out, the Hornets maintained its lead by two goals.
Moving on to the fourth quarter, Calvin continued to battle as Boelens recorded another goal as Calvin trailed by one.
With just under four minutes left of play, Bontreger connected with the back of the net to tie the game up 9-9.
Neither team was able to record another goal and as the clock ran out, the game headed into overtime.
As the two teams battled looking to walk away with the win, it was junior Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi) who put the Knights on top as he blasted a goal in the cage and Calvin took the 10-9 victory.
Leading the Knights in scoring was Boelens with a hat-trick and two assists. Bontreger had two goals and one assits. Gandars also recorded two goals. Chase sparling, Foster, and Griffin Sparling all had one goal each.
Sophomore goalie Gerrit Kurtycz (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) recorded 15 saves in goal earning a 0.625 save percentage.
Head Coach Dave Hoger touched on Calvin's performance. "We started the game with a lot of mental mistakes which led to a lot of extra opportunities for Kalamazoo. We talked at halftime about focusing on the little things and our guys responded in a big way. I'm proud of the way we overcame adversity against a very organized and talented Kalamazoo team."
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they travel to Hope to take on the Flying Dutchmen at 1 p.m.
